Perfect World has officially confirmed Shanghai as the host city for the second CS2 Major in 2027, scheduled to run from November 22 to December 12. The prize pool is set at $1.25 million, while the venue has yet to be announced.
The confirmation came via an official trailer on X, but the news had already been partially leaked when a social media competition inadvertently revealed Shanghai as the host a couple of days too early. The initial announcement of China as the host nation came as part of Perfect World's nine-year anniversary of Valve's shooter's launch on the Chinese mainland – a commercial context that underscores that the choice of Shanghai is no geographical coincidence.
The geographical and commercial significance of the decision becomes clearer when looking at the bigger picture. 2027 will be the first time in Counter-Strike history that Europe is not represented by a single Major during a calendar year: the first Major will be held in Buenos Aires by FiReSPORTS, and the second in Shanghai. At the same time, Shanghai 2027 is another step in a broader Asian expansion – PGL Major Singapore 2026 is already planned as that year's Major, and Shanghai 2024 was Asia's first ever.
The fact that Perfect World is returning to Shanghai specifically, rather than another Chinese city, is hardly without reason. Shanghai Major 2024 drew full houses not only during the playoff phase, but also throughout much of the group stage, giving the organiser a strong case for a repeat. The expected tournament structure follows the format that has been in place since 2025: 32 teams spread across three Swiss phases followed by an eight-team playoff.
With both 2027 Majors now confirmed – Buenos Aires and Shanghai – the year's calendar is set, and Asia's growing weight in the CS2 circuit is hard to overlook.
