IEM Cologne 2027 will be the tournament's biggest edition ever with a 360-degree stage and expanded playoffs
IEM Cologne 2027 is being expanded into the tournament's biggest edition ever, featuring an eight-team playoff over four days, a 360-degree stage setup in the Lanxess Arena, and a total financial framework of $1,250,000.

ESL has officially confirmed the format for IEM Cologne 2027, and the changes are significant enough to move the event into a new tier of CS2 tournaments.
The most visible shift is the expansion from six to eight teams in the playoffs, adding two extra quarterfinals and extending the playoff phase from three to four days. In addition, a bronze match is being introduced immediately before the final. All in all, this gives fans four full days of live action at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, compared to the three they have previously been able to expect.
At least equally ambitious is the transformation of the stage: the Lanxess Arena will be converted into a 360-degree setup, with teams placed centrally in the arena and thus visible from all sides. This is a format that not only changes the spectator experience, but also signals that ESL wants to elevate its own flagship event to a level that matches the biggest sporting occasions.
The total financial framework for the tournament has been set at $1,250,000, distributed across prize money and club bonuses. The winner receives $420,000 in prize money along with a club bonus of $80,000.
The tournament runs from August 4 to August 15, 2027, and all phases will be played physically on LAN. Invitations to the top spots are based on the global VRS ranking, while four wildcard spots are also available.
For the CS2 tournament landscape, it is noteworthy that ESL is choosing to upgrade its own EPT Championship flagship rather than simply repeating a well-established formula. The expansion sets a new standard for what a non-major event can offer in terms of scale and production.
