Eternal Fire eliminate Astralis amid their own roster turmoil: audaz on his way out

Eternal Fire defeated Astralis 2-1 in Stake Ranked Episode 5 and sent the Danes home in fourth place – but the victory came from a team that is itself in the middle of a significant restructuring period.

Astralis did win Eternal Fire's own map pick, Dust2, with 13-10, but weak T-sides on Ancient and especially Cache cost them the overall match. On the decisive third map, Cache, Astralis managed to take only one round on the T-side in the second half despite a promising start with six rounds on the CT-side and a 1v2 clutch from ryu in the pistol round.

The paradox is striking: Eternal Fire delivers a tournament victory while the team behind that performance is in the process of being dissolved. Controller player audaz is expected to enter free agency after his contract with the organisation expires, and he has already indicated that he is open to offers from all regions. Previously, in-game leader nekky was likewise released to explore his options. Eternal Fire's current active roster counts, according to available information, only three players – Spear, Favian and echo – as well as two coaches.

The background to the turmoil is that Eternal Fire was not selected as a partnered organisation in the upcoming VCT cycle, but the organisation has maintained that it will remain in the Valorant ecosystem and compete at the highest level.

The question is what the ongoing roster dissolution means for the team's competitiveness going forward. A victory over Astralis is a concrete result, but with two key players on their way out and only three active roster spots filled, the foundation for future performances is uncertain. Eternal Fire essentially needs to build a new team, even while they are still reaping results with the old one.
