Minecraft Dungeons 2 gives players first access to The Sift – a year before the dimension hits the main game

Minecraft is getting its first new dimension in over 14 years, but the path there runs surprisingly through a spin-off. Mojang revealed during Minecraft LIVE in September 2026 that The Sift is coming to Java and Bedrock Edition during 2027 – but players who don't want to wait can experience the dimension already via Minecraft Dungeons 2, which launches on 29 September 2026.

It is a remarkable choice by Mojang. The spin-off title effectively serves as an exclusive preview of content that is central to the main game's future. The Sift is not merely a level in Dungeons 2 – it is the fourth official dimension in the Minecraft universe, placing itself alongside the Overworld, the Nether, and The End.

In Dungeons 2, The Sift is described as a living and soulful world with unique biomes such as Meadow and Carapace, rainbow-coloured bodies of water, and new hostile mobs. The dimension is closely tied to the game's narrative, where dimensional rifts serve as portals into The Sift. It is important to emphasise, however, that Mojang has not yet confirmed which of these elements will be carried over to the vanilla version of the game.

For vanilla Minecraft, details are still sparse. Mojang showed a brief visual presentation and hinted at one mob during Minecraft LIVE, but access mechanics, the full mob roster, and the biome structure for Java and Bedrock have not yet been announced.

This leaves a clear hierarchy: Dungeons 2 is currently the only way to set foot in The Sift, and that gives the spin-off title a role that extends far beyond the usual. While Mojang is expected to gradually release more information ahead of 2027, it is Dungeons 2 that sets the agenda for what The Sift actually is.
