Evil Geniuses is shutting down: What does it say about the state of esports when a 25-year-old organization cannot survive?
Evil Geniuses will shut down on November 2, 2026, after more than 25 years in esports. CEO Chris DeAppolonio points to limited sponsorship revenue and rising competitive costs – and the closure raises questions about the sustainability of the entire industry.

On November 2, 2026, Evil Geniuses will turn off the lights. The organization, which has existed for over 25 years, can no longer be operated responsibly – and this is not an isolated event, but a symptom of deeper structural problems in the esports industry.
CEO Chris DeAppolonio pointed to two specific factors in the official announcement: limited access to sponsorships and the ever-increasing costs of competing at the top level. Even after a period of stabilization and expansion into new titles and a creator roster, it was not enough. When an organization with that kind of history cannot make it work, it is a signal that should be taken seriously.
EG is not alone. Complexity shut down earlier this year after 23 years in the industry, and NAVI has announced that they are leaving their VCT partnership after the 2026 season. On top of that, the eighth and final partnership slot in VCT Americas for 2027 has already been filled – with no room for Evil Geniuses. In other words, the organization has not only run out of resources; it has also run out of structural opportunities within the format that today defines the competitive scene.
This raises an uncomfortable question: If neither the sponsorship market nor the tournament structure can sustain organizations with decades of experience and proven results – including a VALORANT Champions title in 2023 – then who can it sustain?
For players and staff, there is a concrete consequence: Everyone can speak with new organizations from the time of the announcement, while VALORANT players are formally free from November 2, when the 2026 season ends and free agency begins. DeAppolonio has personally offered to serve as a reference for everyone leaving the organization.
The esports industry has long promised to mature into a sustainable business model. Evil Geniuses' closure is yet another sign that that process remains unfinished.
