MW4's Double XP Change Has Been Long Awaited – But Does It Come Too Late?
Activision is changing Double XP tokens in MW4 so that they only count down during active matches from October 23, 2026. The change has been requested for years, but arrives only with the new title – and coincides with a camo reversal that has caused frustration.

With just under a month until the launch of Modern Warfare 4, Activision has announced that Double XP tokens will going forward only count down while the player is in an active public match. The change takes effect on October 23, 2026, and also applies to existing tokens from Black Ops 7, which can be transferred to MW4.
The system has worked differently for years: as soon as a token was activated, the countdown ran continuously – including while the player was sitting in a lobby waiting for a match. This meant that players lost token time without having any control over the situation, and the complaint has, according to available information, been one of the most recurring community requests across several Call of Duty titles.
Too Late to Make a Real Difference?
The question is whether the fix arrives at the right time. The change is implemented exclusively in MW4 and does not apply retroactively to previous titles, where players have already used tokens under the old rules. The fix is therefore delivered as a feature in a new game rather than as an improvement for the existing player base.
The timing is noteworthy, because Activision simultaneously finds itself in a period of heightened community frustration. On September 28, 2026, the publisher corrected its own earlier announcement and confirmed that weapon camos from older titles would not, after all, be transferred to MW4 Warzone – contrary to what had originally been communicated. The correction triggered an overwhelmingly negative reaction from Warzone players and underscores that the Double XP news lands in a climate marked by disappointment.
Operators, operator skins, and weapon blueprints from previous titles are still being transferred to MW4 Warzone, but the camo reversal has already left many players feeling blindsided. In that light, the question is justified: is a long-requested XP adjustment enough to make a difference for a player base that has just had another expectation broken?
